More information : (SK 00565403) Egg Well (NAT) (1) "Renibus, et splien, cordi, jecorque medetur/Mille malis prodest ista salubris aqua". These words are carved in stone over the well (of Roman origin) at Ashenhurst. This well is commonly called the Egg Well, probably from the oval way it is enclosed in masonry (a). Tradition ascribeds considerable medicinal properties to Ashenhurst Well, or Egg Well, ... which is of Roman origin (b). (2) The supposed Roman well is enclosed in a small, square brick building and the door is nailed down. Local enquiries suggest the well is of doubtful antiquity. (3) Within a small, square 19th c stone building is a rectangular depression 2.0m by 1.5m and 1.0m deep, set into a stone floor with stone steps at each corner. There is an oval depression in the stone floor of this well, from which rusty water seeps. The feature is all of 19th c construction with no evidence of antiquity about it.
